Shouts to the 56k massive..</strike>

here it is!

Yes, I finally got it together and recorded a new dancehall mix. A few hours practice and a nervous 40 mins later here it is. Pretty much a collection of most of the riddims I've been feeling all through the summer season with a bit of a twist - all except the lovers at the start are centred around 100bpm. It's a weird tempo, and one which I'm definitely endeavoring to build up a collection of. Stuck between halftime grinding at 90bpm and all out jump up near the 120 bpm range, I find it quite interesting to see the general weirdness and uniqueness the 100-riddims seem to present. I think it's something to do with being out of peoples natural rhythym, so the riddims themselves have to really work, otherwise the dancefloor just falls apart.

VANITY --------------------------- (0:00)
| Half Pint - So many lovers
| Shabba Ranks - When you're up

A little lovers form the Digital B stable to start off the mix and ease the summer mood in. I'm sure there's a million versions on this riddim but these are the only two I have, the Shabba being the stronger of the two. These kind of mid-90s bouncey bassline and stripped down drum tunes are pretty much universally loved, so I thought it would be nice to throw them in!

8 frozen Modules - Low byte riddim (4:30)

Now at the other end of the scale - 8FM is one of those crazy dsp jockeys from the states who is unbelievably prolific (under a large number of aliases and genres), and annoyingly consistent with the quality of his releases. Most of it sounds like clinical blue shards of digital ice sprayed sharply in your face but with this release on the planet mu label he toned it down a bit and had a bit of fun trying to evolve the dancehall genome.... There's a practice in plant biotech called biolistics where small particles of gold are coated with DNA and shot with force at very young plant cells, where it's integrated at random into the plant genome. Thats what this sounds like.

DREAMWEAVER ---------------------- (6:20)
| TOK - Fire
| Chico - Thick and Thin
| Nicky B - The way we roll
| Bounty killer - Hot like fire
| Jagwa - Man a badman

One of the alltime GREAT 100's, this riddim is another testament to producer Lenky's mastery of the tempo. TOK come with their typical anthemic choruses and individual verses, to great effect here, actually using the style to their advantage rather than just doing it because it's what they do. The Chico and Nicky B versions are the stars here though. Who doesn't love sexy R&B crooning about the gangster way of life? Pure gold.

MESSAGE 2 YOU RUDY --------------- (12:05)
| Grant Phabio - Version
| Smoker - Rudie no more
| Silvertones - Only Me
| Echo Minott - Can't stay away

When I first heard this I flipped out. There really really needs to be more of this - wonderfully produced ska with a consistent tempo which is mixable with other stuff. Never fails to get people on the dancefloor. The smoker version for me far is definitely the pick of the bunch, but I also like the motown quartet vibe in the silvertones version and the subtle changes of the Echo minott. Really a must-buy riddim in my opinion. The only problem is the rhythym is so strong it can be a bugger to mix out of. People get so used to that infectious bassline being there to ride, and most stuff at this tempo has such a different beat to it, they have trouble finding their feet for a few bars.

ASSAULT -------------------------- (17:25)
| Nu Kidz - Not the time
| MR. Chicken - it a bun dem
| Mr. Lex & Cherine - You've got me
| Buju Banton - No Chance

Riddim of 2005 for me! Those stolen neptunes stabs and the poka-poka mouth sound lifted from an old sly & robbie tune (I think .. can't find it at the moment.) Heavy.

MIGRANE -------------------------- (22:45)
| Christopher Birch - Version
| Torch - They can't stop me
| Queen Ifrica - Dem crazy
| I, Octane - Stepaseed
| Assassin - Cha la la la
| Hawkeye - Thanks for life

Totally forgot about this riddim for the longest time and recently dug it out of my 'leave home' box to wonder why I'd been leaving it out for so long! Really nice compliment to the Assault riddim and the strings help raise the tension just a little bit more. Queen Ifrica has some serious pipes on her - rough as guts vocal which makes Lady Saw sound like Mariah. Would love to hear her do something with the Bug! Assassin and Hawkeye both bring the heat as well as usual.

Strategy - Dunes Dub ------------- (31:55)

Another thing I wish there was more of - 3rd generation Dub produced by DSP jokeys who KNOW WHAT THEY'RE DOING! Lovely delays, well placed stutters and subtle effects enhance rather than distract. I wish I had the patience to make this kind of music...

P. Diddy - Diddy ----------------- (33:30)

You know what it is.

Oh, and the trancehall thing? I guess it's a joke on my mixing style in response to a remark by someone that a dancehall DJ's job is to select rather than 'blend like a trance DJ'... Each to their own, and I kind of like the idea of not really being a true dancehall DJ. More room to move . . . Although I did use lots of lasers in the post production of this mix hahaha...

crazy journal font

Seems someone forgot to turn off the 'fairground' formatting on the font.. I basically had the idea because I could never finish the House music track more than it appears here (although lately I've made some progress haha..). The plan was for everyone to make a 1:30 track which continues on from the track before. The result is something akin to fat wreck chords "short music for short people". Completely ADD friendly & all over the place, with some really nice surprises in there. CDR, Gram, Terminal 11, and Benny woo are personal favourites. The track 'lil Caleb made with his dad (better known as Mu-ziq) is also quite nice, reminiscent of early dntel. Point is, the dude made some killer tracks back in the day (and probably still does) yet all we, the people, get are scrappy little morsels like this:

Who Is It? - Shooting Stars & Asteroids Mix 12 inch [REPH174EP] $9.00
(RELEASE DATE: 10-25-05)
Label: Rephlex Notify Me (What is this?)
Super secret Rephlex mystery release! This is a cult remix of a classic song that has pleased crowds the world over for many years and finally the Rephlex officiandos have decided, and have been allowed, to share it with everyone. Emotionally charged and innovatively produced, it's a great tune for any environment. The record is a collaboration between two highly acclaimed artists, a boy and a girl, from different countries - but from the same nation... of Braindance! One is incredibly successful in his field of mathematics, ju jitsu, cookery and polka dancing and the other is a well-known and accomplished vocalist and performer, popular around the world. Unfortunately, most of my kid is currently either refusing to turn on, or in a half finished state. Recent influences, however, have encouraged me to get back on the hobby horse and pull out the solder and wire once again (melting plastic fumes be damned!). I've always had this vision of creating a circuit-bent-gear-driven dub band, but more on that once it starts to take shape. . .

In the meantime, I'd like to share with you one of those influences, who's herky-jerky jack-inducing messes are a true inspiration. In case you haven't yet guessed, I'm talking about the weirdness which is Eats Tapes. Their site holds little information, but the crunches warped tones and squeels all scream (sometimes quite literally) circuit bent gear.

housemice

automata

ptery d

To really appreciate their sound though, a live set (and setup - see below!) is required... turns out theres one available over at transplantsf!

eats tapes live

This flickr image confirms some bendy-ness definitely plays a part in their sound.

Check:

The 707 with its extra knobs
The white childrens toy (top middle)
The lunchbox with wires coming out??? (appears to have a scsi cable connected..)

But wait.. hold up... What is circuit bending, you might ask? (or may not, depending on wether or not you've ever been on the internet..)

First method of circuit bending - Forge new connections.

Remember when you were a kid, on a road-trip, and took along a little sound generating black box.. with various bomb, laser & gun effects. You were told to GIVE IT A REST for just a few minutes, a command you ignored, resulting in a retaliation of button mashing as your brother/sister/parent tried to wrench the device off of you. You discover- two buttons at once make a new, trilling, even more annoying sound!

The concepts behind this method have been abused and used many times before

Second method of circuit bending - The power sink

A few mintues of this sound later, the batteries are wearing out. The sound pitches down ... and goes haywire. Squelches burp forth from the little 8ohm speaker. You love it! Unfortunately (or fortunately from your parents point of view), dying batteries soon become dead batteries... . . . . . .

Hmm... Unfortunately, along with the batteries, so perishes the usefulness of wonderfully illustrative pseudo-anecdote..

I'll leave you with some links to dig through! This is only part one, so stay tuned for future posts where I'll provide some more direct examples which I found inspiring and interesting. . .

Tip of the iceberg
Reed Ghazala's anti-theory workshop - The daddy of circuit bending. A word of advice - get the digest if you value your inbox!
Circuit bending for dummies - Not as condescending as it sounds - actually really well written and informative.
Burnkit 2600 links list Within a stack of unlabeled CDRs I uncovered the only existing professional recording I have participated in: Muscle Car.

16 going on 17, and I was already in love with weird music. Lo-Fi Garage (not garridge) to be exact. Wonderful 7"s on the sympathy for the record industry and estrus labels, along with japanese bands like teengenerate, guitar wolf and the jet boys were on high rotation. My walkman was always blasting out tinny cassette tapes jam packed with raw, clipped, feedback ridden recordings; the tape hiss and compression only adding to the signiture sound of these bands. The New Bomb Turks, Devil Dogs, Oblivians, and The Makers eventually led on to hyper-metal like Zeke and REO Speed Dealer .... and led me to join this band. I present to you, my awesome 16 yr old bass riffage! (temporarily on yousendit. . . let me know if you want a slightly more permenant source!)

Alright Tonight
Queen Of Noise
Don't cum in my mouth and tell me you love me too
Talk Dirty To Me (poison cover)

I left the band to go to Japan... Maybe there WERE more electronic peeps holding it down in A-town; I just didn't know it yet*.

While browsing the "whats on" listing for this Saturday (Friday night my pal Pat is getting married!)in the local free dance oriented street press I couldn't help but feel a little downhearted. Here is the list, with nights that actually have their style of music listed. There are more but they typically just have one or two DJ's names; something which i doubt people struggling to promote new style of music would have the foresight to avoid.

Apothecary - Deep house in the wine cellar with Bensun + Bundi

Cargo Club + Bar - Funky house + disco with residents Audio Porn + rotating guests Mo, Minx, GTB, Stevie + Ben James

Chichi (Gouger St) - House with DJs Ezee G + Juddo

Church - Fresh Feelgood Dance: Commercial dance with DJs James E, Justin Carey, Justice + MCs Sam, Mischief & Renard and
special guest DJ Agent Smith; R&B with DJs Spinbad + Capital D

Colonel Light Hotel - D’Funk: R&B with DJ Capital D + DJ Silk

Electric Circus - House with residents Paul Glenn + D Lux

Elysium Lounge - Deep jazzy house + DJs Seamless, Juddo + Lachlan Pender

Heaven - Clubland: Commercial dance with DJs Rmac, Souli + Carosh + MCs Tim, Jules + Dave Eason; R&B with DJs Chris C, Minix,
Krisp plus MC NRG + Mikey B; sexy house with DJs Souli, Carosh + Minix; live band Triplescore + DJ Orbe

Hyatt (Waves) - Essential Saturdays: R&B + funky house with DJ Emmanuel

Isobar - Funky grooves and disco cuts with Jontay + guests + instrumentalists

Kings Head - Smooth house with DJs Digde, Professor X, D-lux + guests

Mansions - Top 40, dance + R&B with DJ Lazy B

Mojo West - Flavour: Funky house, party breaks and happy house with DJs ATB, John Doe, Professor X + Pranksta

Queens Arms Hotel - Top 40 fun with DJ Nathan Harrison

Red Square - Urban: David James, Mark C, Matt Decker, Lazy B + MC Jazz; Flava (3am-9am): R&B recovery with DJs David James

Sol Bar - Fever: Retro dance with DJ Maverick

Stirling Hotel - DJ Dynamic playing top 40, dance + R&B

Tonic - Krush: House with DJs Karma, GTB, Kid Naughty + Maverick on percussion; R&B with DJs Matt G, Ultima, FBI, MC Shyne +
Krush dancers

Wakefield Hotel - House

Waves Nightclub and Bar (Hyatt Regency) - Essential Saturdays: R&B + deep house with DJ Emmanuel

Worldsend - Party DJs playin’ funk, disco + house

Spoilt for choice really.

*this is unlikely. One 19 year old Norwegian kid who pre-empted the lord's return to fiddly step sequenced dittys, going by the name E.O.D., is currently ruling my playlists and breaking my heart all at once. His warm, weaving, interplaying melodies seem like the perfect soundtrack to a long forgotten children’s book, with acid lines sneaking in and out between washes of pretty chords and drums slowly evolving to highlight the emotions within.

for example, hear how the confident regiment of tenwa breaks away to a slinky cowbell and handclap shuffle as the pads which up until that moment bespoke utter joy turn into something altogether more spooky.

unirater too evokes visions of a spooky wood, branches grabbing at your clothes as you walk the narrow path... then all hell breaks loose as the sky opens up, hail rains down and youre forced to run without direction, deeper into the dark unkown in search of cover. The emergence of the wonderfully linked acid line & ravey stab bass in the end resolve the tune but still help keep the mood tense and dark

buxlerfin is a real taste of bittersweetness, with an enthusiastic acid line evolving in competition with more melancholy chords while disco kicks and open high hats spur the listener on. . . The wonderfully restrained refrain again highlights EOD's talent for wrenching emotion out of his machines

IF you enjoy these few tracks I highly recommend checking out more here: Electronic acid productions

Don't sleep!

In other news, I've probably been reading one too many boomkat reviews lately..

Log on, and let chi chi man be.

Some current posting going-ons regarding discussion of homophobic dancehall lyrics, and the consequences thereof, caused me to recall Elephant Man's version on the liquid riddim... with added perspective

Despite being ludicrously catchy (having it worm its way into my head at the most unexpected times....) what was "log on" saying exactly? A call to arms for all the 'wired' jamaicans to get online and do what they can to once again quoth chichimanfriend? Not exactly... A quick google sets me straight:

from caribupdate

On the new album, Elephant Man also abstains from the gay-bashing that is a time-honored tradition in dancehall -- and the source of some controversy after his 2001 hit "Log On." That track, which contained the lyrics "Log on and step pon chi chi man," is meaningful only if you know that "log on" is a dance step in which the dancer seems to be squashing a roach with one foot, and "chi chi man" is a derogatory term for a homosexual man.

"Yeah. 'Log On' 'cause a lot of stuff happen . . . a lot of people was offended, but you know, I wasn't doing 'Log On' to hurt nobody," he says now. "I'm just doing the song that everybody can dance, enjoy themself."

"Log On" and lyrics from several other previous Elephant Man tracks have led him, along with Bounty Killer and Beenie Man, to be targeted by a gay rights group in Britain, which has sought to bar them from performing there. And in October, an Elephant Man show at Alfred University in Upstate New York was canceled after objections from student organizations.

One can imagine discussions between Atlantic and VP executives and Elephant Man about leaving homophobic lyrics off "Good 2 Go," but Elephant Man plays down the whole issue. "When I go in the studio, I don't go in the studio to talk about those type of things," he says. "I go into the studio to make hit records for the fans, and for people to buy and for people to love. I don't go in the studio thinking about that guy living his life that way and to curse him out or to pass judgment on nobody. It's your life. Do what you want to do. We all have to answer to God one day, so live your life how you want to live it."

So..how many years will it be before the blog-post is a dance in jamaica? And how long after that until it's used against batty boys?

Viroids

With this out of the way, I'll get my new mix happening.

In other news, Kelly Osbourne might just be the straw that breaks the heavily pitch corrected 80s throwback pop tune's back. Some of you will probably know me as minikomi (maybe !) others as Adam.. I live in Australia, love dancehall/breakcore and yes, even idm (and other such musical skeletons eg emo ho ho ho....) but i digress.

The first mix...

junglefarmer1.mp3

Ivan Riddim - killer new riddim by the quirky minor 7 flat 5 label. Get your freak on fallout for the new millenium supported by arabic melodies and trumpet blasts which alternate between dubbed out memories and rusted jazz mutes. Look out for Vybz Kartel's absoloutely hillarious lines.. especially the references to certain parts of the male anatomy - although terribly off the mark, for some reason I keep imagining him giggling behind his hand like a schoolgirl after this line.. I know I did! Flavour: Rocky Road.

Al pancho - Ivan
Luton Fyan - Idiot thing
Vybz Kartel - Livin Allright
Beenie Man - Do what you want
Turbulance - Too much Killin'

Aphrodesiac sound system : Coolie dance mash up - Not really feeling the other tracks on this - too hokey - but this one works well. African vocals refresh a tired riddim.. Flavour: Honeycomb

Loefah : Twisup VIP - ek! sorry about the pitch bends in this mix... but it worked out good in the end! Amazing deep dubstep from DMZ camp. Enough bass pressure to turn their dark grimey coal into a glistening diamond. Flavour: Choc-mint

Donnacha Costello - Dry Retch - more from this bloke later on (ooer) but for now he serves as a nice wanky outro for me to cheat with... I have to go to sleep now. Flavour: Pistachio

Goodnight! I hope you enjoy the mix, more to come...
